Biography

Jean Cazals was born in Paris and raised in Geneva before moving to London to study at the London College of Printing. He spent 10 years shooting portraits of actors, musicians and writers before moving his lens on to cover food and travel. Jean is one of the world’s leading food and lifestyle photographers. He was the first winner of the iconic Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year Award and has photographed over 90 cookbooks for some of the biggest names in food, from Jamie Oliver to Thomas Keller, Phil Howard, Raymond Blanc and many others chefs. He is devoted to food as much as photography. He loves eating, tasting discussing food, restaurants, atmosphere. Jean loves exploring new ideas, working on conceptual projects as well as showing the simplest ingredient beautifully. Jean has a great sense of detail and his use of soft lighting and graphic images always bring the best out of food, always searching and creating, he constantly looks to bring character and a strong identity into his photography to elevate the final results. Food ‘art' is also something he likes to shoot and he has participated in a number of exhibitions, including a one man show in London in 2013. Jean was the author and photographer of Teatime which received the award for "Best Dessert Book, UK" at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, 2012.

Beautifully put together by Phaidon. Classy look, great photography, choice of paper. Gorgeous opposition of beautifully styled plates and nature and portrait photographs. Phaidon as always delivers.

Marco Pierre White

Black and white reportage on Polaroid film and a clever lay out made that book timeless. The food photography itself however had an old feel about it unfortunately which otherwise would have make that book even more iconic !

A beautiful book which started the travel & food affair. The spirit of a place away fro the usual kitchen food opposite to recipe. This book is important as well because on of the first if its not the first to be shot, styled, design with recipes and travel photography from the same person ! Alastair did manage to do the whole in a beautiful way. Alastair has great eye for styled simplicity with atmosphere
