Biography

Madhur Jaffrey is a culinary authority on Indian cuisine and is famous for making Indian cooking accessible to a western audience. Her first cookbook, An Invitation to Indian Cooking, is included in the James Beard Foundation’s Cookbook Hall of Fame. A successful food writer, actress and film star, her second book, World-of-the-East Vegetarian Cooking, published in 1981, was an instant sensation. According to food writer Craig Claiborne the book is, “the finest authority on Indian cooking in America… and is the most inspired book on vegetable cookery (I) have encountered”. In 1982, Jaffrey was the star of an eight- part cooking series aired on BBC entitled, “Madhur Jaffrey’s Indian Cookery”, which went over extremely well with the British viewers. Since her initial success in television, Jaffrey has gone on to film a number of different series for the BBC. Some of her other publications include, A Taste of India, Madhur Jaffrey’s Cookbook and Quick and Easy Indian Cookery.
